16th April 2010 – This morning, drivers witnessed the appearance of a new `airport development` alongside the M5 near Bristol. A giant 70 metre-long mural in a field next to the motorway between junctions 14 and 15, is a blueprint of a runway with a ‘PLANNING APPROVED’ stamp across it. It has been created by recently relaunched magazine, Beautiful Britain to raise awareness of the need for greater local consultation in the planning process. The magazine is concerned that the wishes of local communities are being ignored by central government in an attempt to meet national infrastructure targets. Just one month earlier, the magazine surveyed over 5,000 British people, revealing that eight out of ten feel that not enough is being done to protect the places that they love. In fact, one in seven would like to see more red tape when it comes to planning, to ensure that local voices are heard.

Wednesday 2nd December: The Lord Mayor of Bristol is today calling on local businesses to scrap outdated equipment and save millions off the city’s energy bill. In a bid to reduce the 1 million tonnes of C02 emissions produced by Bristol’s businesses’ and drive out unnecessary costs, the Carbon Trust is launching the Big Business Refit, which is giving out £100m interest-free to help small and medium companies modernise their premises, and equipment. The launch takes place at WBC Automotive, the Bristol-based vehicle collision repair facility. WBC Automotive received a Carbon Trust loan of £98,000, to help replace four old, inefficient spray booths which helped the company to win a substantial new contract with a major car manufacturer. As a result of the new system, WBC Automotive are saving nearly £40,000 a year on energy bills. The Big Business Refit aims to raise awareness amongst Bristol’s businesses of their eligibility for interest-free loans, which from this week are available for up to £500,000. The Government has provided the loans to help cut costs by replacing old, inefficient equipment. The loans are designed to pay for themselves through energy savings, and once paid off, savings go straight back onto the bottom line. Typically, businesses are saving between £14,000 and £130,000 a year by replacing old equipment through the scheme. The £100m from the Carbon Trust is available on a first come, first served basis. Between April and September, South West Businesses replaced over £1.2m of inefficient kit, using interest-free loans. The replacements provided annual savings of nearly £400,000 and over 2,500 tonnes of CO2. At a time when increasingly more small businesses face cash flow pressure and are struggling with the burden of rising overheads, the Carbon Trust are offering a lifeline to help businesses weather the financial storm and make them more competitive, so they are in best position for recovery. Other key figures: • Bristol’s Carbon Footprint – 2.4 million tonnes of CO2 per annum. • Bristol Business Carbon Footprint – 1 million tonnes of CO2 per annum. • 39% of businesses in the South West are unaware that they can cut energy costs by replacing old equipment. • Just under half (49%) of businesses have resorted to staff cuts to save cash. • Over half (59%) of businesses in South West don’t have the cash to upgrade old inefficient equipment. • Bristol businesses have taken out nearly £60,000 in loans in the first six months of 2009. • Nearly half (46%) accept high energy bills as a fixed cost, preferable to paying the upfront cost of replacing old equipment. • Well over half (64%) of small and medium-sized businesses in South West wait until their equipment breaks down completely before replacing it.

Free vaccinations against seasonal flu are available for people in the South West aged 65 and over and for adults and children aged 6 months to 65 years in certain risk categories from October 2009. Amid all the publicity surrounding swine flu, it is important not to under estimate the impact of seasonal flu. Every year it accounts for approximately 8,000 deaths. It can bring on serious complications for people in “at risk” groups and lead to other serious illnesses such as pneumonia. In the average winter, up to 15% of the population will be affected. All people aged 65 and over qualify for the free annual seasonal flu jab, and in addition adults and children aged six months to 65 years with the following conditions should also contact their GP for a free seasonal flu jab: • a heart problem • a chest complaint or breathing difficulties including, bronchitis, emphysema • a kidney disease • lowered immunity due to disease or treatment (such as steroid medication or cancer treatment) • a liver disease • had a stroke or a transient ischaemic attack (TIA) • diabetes • a neurological condition e.g. multiple sclerosis (MS) or cerebral palsy • a problem with, or removal of, their spleen e.g. sickle cell disease. The jab can never offer 100% protection from seasonal flu, but does have a success rate of between 70 and 80% while others are more likely to get milder symptoms. Don’t forget, the seasonal flu jab does not protect against swine flu. Patients with seasonal flu typically have a fever or a high temperature (over 38°C / 100.4°F) and two or more of the following symptoms: • unusual tiredness • headache • runny nose • sore throat • shortness of breath or cough • loss of appetite • aching muscles • diarrhoea and/or vomiting In those circumstances you should stay at home, keep warm and rest, let a member of your family or friend know that you are ill, drink plenty of liquids and eat what you can. If you are in an at risk group or your symptoms get worse and you have chest pains or experience shortness of breath, you should contact your GP. Seasonal flu peaks each winter between December and March, which is why the Department of Health is urging those in the at risk groups and those aged 65 and over to make sure they get their free jab now before flu starts to circulate.
